SEATTLE (AP) -- A woman who registered her dog to vote in Washington state has pleaded not guilty to misleading a public servant.
Jane Balogh says she registered her dog, Duncan, to demonstrate flaws in the King County election system.
She put her phone bill in the dog's name, then used that as identification to register him as a voter. She then submitted ballots in the dog's name with a paw print as a signature. She wrote "VOID" on the ballots and didn't cast any votes.
Balogh says she expected to be thanked for pointing out the problem, not prosecuted.
If convicted, she could be fined $1,000 or jailed up to 90 days.
The elections office says the system is designed to catch fraud in voting, not the registration process.
